Material Concept at ELS
At Edie Lou Studio, we believe that the materials we choose are just as important as the designs we create. Our commitment to sustainability drives us to select natural, durable, and ethical materials that align with our values of longevity, envornmental responsibility, and timeless beauty. At ELS, we choose fabrics not only for their sustainability but for their rich semiotic significance. They are more than textiles - they are a dialogue between past and future, practicality and principle, identity and ideals. Every piece you wear from Edie Lou Studio is a reflection of our vision for a more sustainable fashion future, where history, beauty, and sustainability converge in every thread.

Waxed cotton, with roots in rugged outerwear for explorers and adventurers, combines heritage with innovation, representing durability and a sustainable approach to functional fashion.
Waxed cotton is a durable, water-resistant fabric made by treating cotton with a natural was coating. This process creates a robust, eco-friendly alternative to synthetic materials, offering a long-lasting protection against the elements. Waxed cotton is a versatile fabric that can be used in outerwear, accessories, and bags, providing both style and function. The beauty of waxed cotton is its ability to develop a unique patina over time, much like the garments it becomes part of. It ´s a testament to our belief in creating pieces that grow in character and history.
To care of waxed cotton, avoid machine washing, as it can trip away the wax coating. Instead, wipe the fabric clean with a damp cloth to remove dirt or stains. For more stubborn marks, use a mild soap solution and a soft brush.
To maintain its water resistance, it ´s important to reapply wax after some time. You can do this by using a wax treatment specifically designed for cotton, gently warming the fabric with a hairdryer, and apply eco-friendly wax evenly. Reheat to absorb the wax, then let it cure for 24-48 hours. This restores water resistance sustainably.
For storage, keep waxed cotton garments in a cool, dry place, away from direct heat or sunlight, to preserve the fabric ´s integrity and coating. With the right care, waxed cotton remains a reliable and water-resistant choice for many years.

Linen symbolises Égalité, Liberté, Fraternité, echoing its role during the French Revolution, while also representing timeless durability and simplicity.
Linen is one of the oldest and most sustainable fabrics known to humanity. Made from the flax plant, linen is naturally strong, breathable, and biodegradable. It requires fewer pesticides and fertilisers compared to other crops, making it a far more environmentally friendly choice. Linen ´s ability to keep you cool in warm weather and its elegant texture makes it perfect for creating both casual and sophisticated pieces. With each wear, linen only becomes softer, embracing the idea of lasting value and timeless design.
To care for it, wash on a gentle cycle with mild detergent and avoid bleach. Air dry or tumble dry on low heat, removing promptly to minimise wrinkles. Iron slightly damp with medium heat for a crisp finish. Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. For stains, blot quickly and use natural remedies. With proper care, your linen garments will remain beautiful and long-lasting.

Cork leather stands for innovation and sustainability, merging tradition with eco-conscious progress.
Cork leather is a sustainable, vegan alternative to traditional leather, made from the cork oak trees. This material is lightweight, durable, and has a unique texture that resembles traditional leather. The cork oak tree naturally regenerates its bark, making it an infinitely renewable resource. By choosing cork leather, we are able to provide luxurious, environmentally friendly accessories and garments that offer both elegance and functionality. It embodies our commitment to cruelty-free materials that don ´t compromise on quality or aesthetic.
To clean cork leather, wipe it gently with a damp cloth and mild soap if needed. Avoid soaking or using harsh chemicals. Let it air dry naturally, away from direct heat or sunlight. Store it in a cool, dry place to maintain its texture and quality.
With proper care, cork leather remains stylish, sustainable, and long-lasting.

Silk symbolises luxury and global connection, evolving from royal exclusivity to ethical sophistication.
Silk, known for its luxurious texture and natural sheen, is a biodegradable material that can be produced using methods that are ethically sourced and animal-friendly. At Edie Lou Studio, we prioritise using peace silk or ahimsa silk, which is harvested without harming the silkworms. In this process, the worms are allowed to complete their life cycle and emerge naturally from the cocoon, ensuring no cruelty is involved. Silk remains a renewable resource, with its exceptional breathability, softness, and strength. By choosing animal-friendly silk, we align with our commitment to sustainability, ethical practices, and creating garments that are both beautiful and compassionate.
Silk is a luxurious, delicate fabric that requires gentle care to preserve its beauty and longevity. Hand wash silk in cool water using a mild detergent, or use a delicate cycle if machine washing is necessary. Avoid wringing or twisting; instead, press gently to remove excess water. Lay flat or hang to air dry, keeping it away from direct sunlight to prevent fading. For wrinkles, use a low-temperature iron on the reverse side.
Proper care ensures silk retains its softness, sheen, and durability over time.

Latex is a natural polymer derived from the sap of the rubber tree (Helvea brasiliensis) later refined through vulcanization - a chemical process that transforms in into a strong, elastic material.
Latex has transitioned from industrial and subcultural origins into a material of powerful expression. Known for its glossy surface and skin-like fit, it speaks to themes of control, vulnerability, and transformation. In fashion, latex resists conventional tailoring - it shapes the body on its own terms and invites a heightened sense of presence.
In the context of our work, latex becomes a language - a symbol of resistance against conformity, and of fluid identity. It challenges the wearer to confront their body, their presence, and the space they occupy. Sculptural yet sensual, restrictive yet empowering, latex continues to blur the boundaries between garment and gesture, fashion and statement.
We are aware that natural latex can cause allergic reactions due to its protein content. That is why we are actively researching and considering alternatives like Vytex - an innovative, low-protein latex - so that our work remains inclusive and responsible.
Latex should be gently hand-washed with mild soap, air-dried out of sunlight, and polished with silicone-based shiner to maintain its look. Store it cool and dark, away from metals and oils. Lotions and perfumes should be avoided during wear, as they may degrade the material.

Cotton symbolizes purity, resilience, and clarity. At ELS, it represents the raw honesty of form - a foundational material treated with intention and respect. We use cotton with intention. We select premium weaves - such as crisp poplin, lightweight lawn, raw cotton, and paper-cotton blends - for pieces that demand structure, breathability, tactile clarity, and ability to hold form. These fabrics support our design approach, offering architectural shape while allowing for techniques such as raw finishing, which contribute to the studio´s distinct material language.
We are fully aware of the environmental concerns associated with conventional cotton, particularly its high water usage. As a result, we limit its application within our collections and prioritize small production runs, headstock sourcing, and efficient pattern cutting to reduce waste.
To maintain the quality and lifespan of your cotton garment, we recommend gentle machine or hand washing with mild detergent, using cold or lukewarm water. Avoid tumble drying when possible - air dry flat or on a hanger to preserve shape and reduce energy use. Iron on low heat if needed. With proper care, your garment will retain its structure and appearance over time, supporting long-term use and minimising environmental impact.
